August was a fantastic month for SimAirline.net that saw seven new organization records, and some truly amazing numbers. We set new records in the following areas:
-11971:36 Flight Hours (beating the old record by 9%)
-2952 PIREPs (+8%)
-27:09 Flight Hours/Active Pilot (+0.3%)
-216 Alaska PIREPs (+14%)
-335 British Airways PIREPs (+14%)
-61 Icelandair PIREPs (+30%)
Several other VAs turned in their best performances in months or even years! Well done, everyone!

Boeing Workers Go On Strike
Machinists at Boeing's largest union, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, went on strike today after failing to reach an agreement with the company for a new contract. Disputed issues included salaries, outsourcing, retirement benefits, and health care. 80% of members voted to reject Boeing's contract offer on Wednesday, and 87% voted to strike. Boeing has reported record profits since its last strike in 2005, and currently has a $346 billion order backlog.

Additional Codeshares - Update
Last month I promised that I would focus on bringing additional codeshare partnerships to SimAirline.net. I want to update you on how that search has gone so far.
I've identified 125 airlines that our virtual airlines' real-life counterparts codeshare(d) with in real life. Of these,
56 do not have a virtual airline based on them (45%)
28 are SimAirline.net VAs (22%)
13 I have not yet contacted for various reasons (10%)
13 I have contacted and not heard back from (10%)
5 do not accurately represent their airline (4%)
4 are current partners (3%)
2 do not meet our quality standards (2%)
1 has no way to contact anyone (1%)
1 replied and declined our offer (1%)
1 is considering our offer (1%)
As you can see, it's pretty difficult to establish partnerships. We're actually quite lucky to have the ones we do have. I will of course continue working to try to establish more partnerships for the future.

747-200 Now Available at British Airways
For over half a century, British Airways served Detroit until it ended service earlier this year. This longtime route is once again available at Virtual British Airways, but now with another British Airways stalwart: the 747-200, our retired aircraft. The 747 was the largest aircraft in the British Airways fleet for over a decade, and with 26 different aircraft in operation, has been an important part of its global growth.I’m pleased to offer this aircraft in its three most common liveries, the "Red Tail" scheme from 1972-1984, the "Landor" scheme (1984-1997), and the current "Chatham Dockyard" Union flag scheme. Additional 747-200 flights may be available in the coming months, possibly to Australia and New Zealand.

Alitalia Files for Bankruptcy
Alitalia filed for bankruptcy yesterday after decades of financial struggles. The airline will continue operating, although its losses are now at €2 million per day. The company is proposing to split the company in two, cut thousands of jobs, and bring in a foreign airline to take over. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi insists that Alitalia remain in Italian hands (likely meaning a merger with Air One), a condition that led to the collapse of Air France-KLM plans to take over earlier this year. What does this mean for Alitalia Virtual? Earlier this year I discussed our position, which has not changed: we will continue to offer Alitalia Virtual. To add on to what I said back in March though, the exact form will be decided in the future—it could be the present with Discontinued Flights, or we might opt to revert to a historical version a la Varig Virtual.
