The City of Kuala Lumpur
Malaysia's capital was founded in 1857 by miners, and became capitalof the Federation of Malaysia in 1896. Malaysia declared independence from Great Britain in 1957. The name Kuala Lumpur means "Muddy Confluence" in Malay, named so because the city lies between the rivers Gombak and Kelang.

Kuala Lumpur is famous for its parks and alleys. The National Mosque of Malaysia is the largest mosque in Eastern Asia. The Petronas Twin Towers are the most famous landmark of the city, and are a symbol of Malaysia's economic growth. Companies like IBM and Micrsoft are located in the Towers, and the building was the tallest in the world from 1998 to 2003, but remain the world's largest twin towers. Kuala Lumpur's architecture contains (and sometimes even combines) Victorian, European, and Chinese styles, but also remembers to the Islamic roots of the country. A great example for this is the railway station, which was built in 1911 when Malaysia was a British colony.

Today, Kuala Lumpur is one of the most important economic centers in Asia. The city boomed during the 1990s with economic growth of 10% a year. 1.5 million people reside in the city, and about 4 million in the region.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL/WMKK)
Kuala Lumpur's new airport opened in 1998 and is located about 60 km south of downtown Kuala Lumpur in the Sepang district. The airport's slogan is "Bringing the World to Malaysia and Malaysia to the World." It has the world's largest air control tower.
