The City of Recife
Recife, or
Reef in Portuguese, is the third largest city in northeast Brazil and the eighth largest (fifth in metropolitan area) city in Brazil. Recife is the capital of the state Pernambuco. It is a major center of trade through its seaport, and the principal industries are in sugar refining, cotton milling, ironworking, pineapple canning and tomato processing, and the manufacturing of cement, asbestos, paper, roofing and leather goods.
Recife is divided by many waterways into separate districts. The governmental district is on the island of Antônio Vaz. Located in the city are the University of Recife (1946), the Catholic University of Pernambuco (1951), and the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (1954). Because of these many waterways, Recife is often called the 'Venice of Brazil', and sometimes the 'Venice of America', due to its fluvial resemblance to the Italian city. Recife is the birthplace of writer Gilberto Freyre, the composer Lenine, and the Canadian hockey player Robyn Regehr.
Notable attractions in Recife include many ancient buildings; historical monuments; Boa Viagem Beach (and many other great beaches), Olinda, a neighboring city and designated UNESCO World
Heritage Site; Casa da Cultura; souvenir shops; the ancient prision building; and the Recife Antigo carnival.
