Netgear or Linksys
So, here's the thing. I'm in the process of moving to my new apartment (transferring to the campus where I'm supposed to finish my bachelor's degree). Obviously, when you move, you install internet, and you need it to become wireless. But I'm in a difficult spot right now.
Should I buy a Linksys or a Netgear router? Or should I buy another brand? The brand name will do since I'm sure they'll have routers under $100.

Well I have a Linksys. But I don't know anything about the netgear so I can't help you on that one. But the Linksys has a few problems with the connectivity (depending on the speed of your internet). At my dad's is where this is at, but he has really slow (45mbs) and it doesn't connect very easily and very well. But that's up to you.

Re: Netgear or Linksys
I dont know about Linksys, but we had Netgear until about a year ago and it was terrible. We had to reboot the thing multiple times a day(each time took over 30mins to get back online), and when it finally connected the signal was faint or non-existent, even though the router was sitting no more than 15ft away. We now use D-Link and love it, we have only had to reboot it once in a year, and that was because of a power outage that messed things up a bit. I would highly recommend D-Link and their products, and it definately cost less than $100.

Re: Netgear or Linksys
I have had Netgear for about 2 years now, and it's never given us a problem. But I'm looking to see if I should stay with Netgear or switch brands (hence, the thread)
D-Link...never heard of it, but I'm sure it's nothing I can't wiki or google up.

Re: Netgear or Linksys
My father's had a Linksys router in his house for the past few years. I've been hooking up to it with my desktop computer, and so far it's worked great for everything I need, especially connecting to VATSIM for my flights.
Re: Netgear or Linksys
Ever since Cisco ate Linksys, they've been sour. We've blown through Linksys routers like we do the daily paper. D-Link's good stuff. Netgear too.

I would also go with D-LINK. I had a linksys, hated it. I then bought a netgear, had trouble setting it up. I returned it and bought the D-Link, never had trouble since.Dennis wrote:So, here's the thing. FYI. Only thing I hate about all routers is that when I use my laptop to control my FMC and Squawkbox while the main computer runs FS, if I use wireless connection, I tend to loose the connection every couple of hours. I got myself a 50' wire and use it when i'm running FS. Using the wire, I never loose the connection and Squawkbox stays connected.
Re: Netgear or Linksys
My linksys died a couple months ago (after running 24/7 for about 6 years, so no complaints). I would have bought another linksys if they didn't look like UFO's! Bought a Netgear and have been satisfied so far.

Re: Netgear or Linksys
Netgear, HANDS DOWN.
I used to run Linksys gear, and generally run a large corporate level network at home but that was a nightmare.
3 years ago I completely overhauled the entire network moving up to gigabit and went with Netgear, it has been a great decision and I have now replaced all non-Netgear products with Netgear. (Exception being an Apple Airport Extreme, used for 802.11N only)
The same holds true at my office, where all networking equipment has been or is being switched to Netgear. We even replaced several Cisco routers and switches with Netgear.

Re: Netgear or Linksys
I have used Netgear for years and they have been great. Very reliable and don't cause any problems. Do not go for Belkin. Every Belkin product I have owned has had some problem with it. The routers I've had cut off from the Internet every 10 minutes and the wireless cards have had poor connectivity.
