I wouldn't go for the 9600 or 9800, as they are last gen cards. Wait another 2 weeks and ATi are going to release the 5*** series. Possibly look for the new 5850 or even 5870? If you have to buy now I would either go with a 4850, or even a 4870 or 4890 if your budget can stretch that far.

How did the card manage to break?

I was playing Assassin's Creed about 3 weeks back and in the middle of the game, the computer kept shutting down. Then I restarted it. The Computer turned on fine but the monitor was not getting any signal from the card. After many failed attempts, I gave up. I sent it to the place from where I bought all the parts of my machine and they said your graphic card needs to be replaced.
