.avi to .wmv conversion failure

hello,
ive been trying to convert some .avi files from my digital camera but when i run it through the video conver to convert it to .wmv it tries to encode, but fails instantly even after a few attempts with different files from my camera but the same issue, i downloaded another video converter but the same failure. i can convert them to .mpg, .mp4 etc... but when i run the raw .avi file though windows movie maker no sound, and when i run the .mpg no video but sound. i cant get my head round this, its only started happening, and ive done the same before with no problems?
also do you know which files sony vegas will edit with no complications?

If you are encoding using Vegas, with some formats you need to encode twice. One for video and the other for audio. I don't really know how you would watch them together on the computer. When I used Vegas I imported the two halves into DVD Architect and ripped the files straight to DVD.

H'm, to me it looks like you don't have the right codec to read the sound from the raw camera AVI. Can you play it with media player?

I suggest that you browse http://www.videohelp.com/ for more help on this subject. You can also download tools like GSpot to figure out which codecs are needed, and whether they are available and properly registered on your system.

Did you install any new software recently?

Ive managed to get the .avi files from my camera to work in Windows movie maker by downloading a codec pack from file hippo
