Forums are Baaack!!! :P
Update:
I want to bring everyone up-to-date, answer some questions, and give you some insight into the future.

Today we were able to bring back online the original AVSIM Forums that had been backed up until just before the hack took place. Our tech team has been working long hours since the wee hours of last Friday, when we started the installation process of the new servers, removing the trashed servers, and putting humpty dumpty back together again.

How did we recover the forums data? Simple... The hacker was an idiot and incompetent. Beyond that, for obvious reasons, I am only going to say that we did have backups that were either totally intact, or were there sufficiently enough for us to regain data. What remained allowed us to regather 100% of the forums.

We have recovered about 90% of the File Library and all of the WEB site. The library files go back to FS98. That should be sufficient to make everyone happy, and all those web sites that in someway link into the library should see their links start to work again, once we can bring the library back into service.

Okay, so... Where do we stand today? Today we have the two new servers online and are working to establish zones, cgi, and all the "infrastructure" to get our web site operational again. We expect to have the complete WEB Site back online by late this coming Thursday (the 28th). The library will take a little longer (it is far more complex).

In addition to the two G5's, we have brought back online a system to use as a DEV box. Development of the library and Steve Stratton's efforts with the new web site will take place there. We have removed the main disks from what had been GREEN and PURPLE and will have them forensically investigated. Once we can swap around some disks, we will reload them with a new OS, and bring them online as more virtual servers for expansion and further scaling.

As some point in the next week or so, we'll have pretty much an AVSIM that you will recognize. However, we are not going to stop there. Steve's working on modernizing our WEB Site, and we have kicked off efforts to redesign our library. We will be posting more news on those soon.

Some things will be noticeably changed. The speed of response by the forums, the WEB Site and when it comes back online, the library, are going to be noticeably faster. We have opened up our "pipe" and you should see file transfers much improved over what had been seen in the library before the crash.

We can't thank the community enough for your emotional and financial support and hanging in there with us throughout this ugly period in AVSIM's history. We are confident that the payback for the community will be a much improved and growing AVSIM. Thank you, again.

I'm telling you, this is a big blessing disguise. A bigger and better AVSIM will emerge. Maybe the hacker was an AVSIM fan who wanted to see it completely revamped and improved, and hacked it to a point that was still recoverable!

Heck yes!
They've got two new beefy hard drives and are given the library a face lift! Hopefully this'll give us great download speeds unlike it used to be. :P

Sounds to me like it's a matter of weeks or days at most.

It doesn't say when the Library will be back up but it should relatively soon. It'll be worth the wait, trust me ;)

A familiar sight! We are nearly there!

It will be interesting to see how PIREP numbers decrease due to this.

I'm not sure when it was posted, but this is on Avsim's forum...
The file library system is being worked on with gusto. We anticipate that the library will be back up and operational in 7 to 10 days. We have yet to determine whether we have recovered everything, and we are also doing file integrity checks before bringing the system back online.

I'm sure most of you read this already on AVSIM website but they made the BBC news http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8244028.stm again!!

I don't know if it was a slow day at BBC or it's a sign of how important Simulation is for the UK!! :)

I would like to see who committed this late April Fools joke and ruined our hobby for quite some time.

I WAS gonna make a little joke, but considering how someone may stumble across it and not read it carefully, I'd rather not post anything.
