About Us
Delta
Virtual is based on the world's largest airline and its regional affiliates,
Atlantic Southeast Airlines (ASA), Chautauqua Airlines, Comair, Compass
Airlines, Freedom Airlines, Mesaba Airlines, Pinnacle Airlines, Shuttle
America, and SkyWest Airlines. Delta Virtual also operates the routes of
Delta Shuttle in the Northeast Corridor. Delta Virtual is SimAirline.net's
largest and most active virtual airline.
In 1924, C.E. Woolman founded the Huff
Daland Dusters, the first aerial crop-dusting company. The company changed
names to Delta Air Service and began passenger service on 17 June 1929,
flying from Dallas to Jackson via Shreveport and Monroe. The airline's
headquarters later moved from Monroe to Atlanta in 1941, where it created
the hub-and-spoke system in 1955. Delta merged with Chicago & Southern
Airlines in 1953, adding service to the Caribbean and South America. Delta
introduced the first domestic jet service on 18 September 1959 with the
DC-8, which it was the first operator of. Delta was also the first airline
to fly the Convair 880 (1960), DC-9 (1965), MD-11 (1991).
Delta expanded its East Coast presence
in 1972 by merging with Northeast Airlines, which led to it becoming the
world's largest 727 operator. Delta was also the largest operator of the
L-1011, with which it began transatlantic service in 1978. In 1982, Delta
employees raised $30 million through payroll deductions to buy the first
767, named The Spirit of Delta. Delta is today the largest 767 operator
in the world. Delta bought Western Airlines and began transpacific service
in 1987, and in its biggest merger, purchased Pan American's European network
and what would become the Delta Shuttle in 1991.
Comair, based in Cincinnati and founded
in 1977, was acquired by Delta in 2000. Comair was the launch customer
for the CRJ, and is today the world's largest operator. ASA, based in Atlanta,
began operations in 1979 and was acquired twenty years later before being
sold to Delta Connection partner SkyWest in 2005.
Delta has been the host airline for the
Olympics twice: Atlanta in 1996 and Salt Lake City in 2002. The airline
was a founding member of SkyTeam in 2000, today the fastest growing airline
alliance in the world. Delta announced a major restructuring of its operations
in September 2004, which included closing its Dallas/Ft. Worth hub on 31
January 2005, and filed for bankruptcy in September 2005, emerging in April
2007. Delta bought Northwest Airlines in October 2008.
